Martin Dugard's new book is The Training Ground, due in stores May 14. His website is www.martindugard.com.
Iron Week
I've fallen far out of the triathlon world, so far out, in fact, that it's hard to remember a time when I stressed about making it to a master's swim workout each morning. But I think this is Ironman week. At least that's what their website says. This means that Babbitt is winging over to Kona, for his annual week of Hawaiian living. The hotels and restaurants will be transformed into a subset of the triathlon culture for the next seven days, and the actual race day itself will be its usual transcendent mixture of pain and triumph.
Central Park
Sitting on a bench in Central Park, just off the marathon course. It's a beautiful September morning, almost cool enough to wear a sweater. I just took the train up from Baltimore, and had planned on going for a run as soon as I got to New York. But the hotel didn't have my room ready and I'm too lazy to find a health club to shower and change before my lunch meeting. So today's run will be in the afternoon. In the meantime, I sit here and write.
Prevention and Cure
Lance Redux
I am still geeking out about the start of cross-country season, and the promising performances of my runners. And while they would make great column fodder, I would be remiss if I didn't spend a few hundred words with the gorilla in the room. Lance Armstrong's recent announcement that he's coming out of retirement has been met with equal parts joy and scorn.
Reuniting
If I was cool enough to play electric guitar really well and was able to pick any name in the world for my band, I would might choose "Martin Dugard and the Unforgiven" or "Fred Sherbet and the Men of Steel." But certainly not "South Coast Party Machine."
Fading Into Anonymity
In watching the Track and Field Olympic Trials this past week, I was constantly struck by the inordinate amount of attention dedicated to the sprint events. Tyson Gay's cramp in the 200 received more air time than the Men's 10,000 meter final, Alyson Felix's desperate desire to qualify in the 200 after failing in the 100 was treated as a national emergency, and NBC just couldn't get enough of those sprint heats, showing every last one of them ad infinitum.

Inspiration
What inspires you? Thinking about how active we all are and what we accomplish, we all get it from somewhere. The music we listen to in our iPods or at the gym, losing five pounds, bigger biceps, running a faster 5K and watching amazing athletes in the Olympics – so many sources of skin-tingling inspiration.
Adventure: Hawaii
This time of year, when someone mentions Hawaii, we think Ironman. But there are tons of other fun activities to do on the Islands.
Take Advantage of Our National Parks
Taking a vacation in a tight economy can be an adventure in itself but there are alternatives. A trip to a National Park is a great way to get away from the stresses of your day and spend some time with friends, family, and nature.
Val and the Ironman
With Ironman celebrating it's 30th year, few know the efforts of Valerie Silk, without whom the race would not be what it is today.
