Emotions Power Mike Vine, Melanie McQuaid to victory at XTERRA USA Championship in Nevada

Inspired by 5-time XTERRA USA Champ and now cancer-stricken athlete Jamie Whitmore - Canadians Mike Vine and Melanie McQuaid powered their way through a chilly morning and grueling course to win the eighth annual XTERRA USA Championship on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe this afternoon.

Cabada takes men's USA Marathon title, Goucher Wins Women's 10 Mile Championship

Fernando Cabada (Boulder, Colo.) topped a competitive men's field to win the USA Men's Marathon Championship in 2:16:32 at the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Sunday in Minneapolis, Minn. The weekend's events also included the USA Women's 10 Mile Championship where 2008 Olympian and 2007 World Outdoor 10,000m bronze medalist Kara Goucher (Portland, Ore.) cruised to her first USA road title in 53:44.

Anthony Famiglietti (Knoxville, Tenn.) unleashed a powerful kick to win his second men's 5 km title in 13:42, while Shalane Flanagan (Pittsboro, N.C.) cruised to her second consecutive women's title in 15:28 on Sunday at the USA 5 km Championships in Providence, Rhode Island.

My father was a Glider Guider in World War II...and also somewhat of a raconteur, a most enthusiastic story teller. While this trait of his basically drove my mother crazy and delayed our departure from any event or gathering where there was the possibility of a willing audience (two ears would do), he did in fact have some pretty good stories to tell.
